Hi guys! Today’s blog is going to be a little different. So about two weeks ago my dad brought up an aquarium. I loved the idea of being able to fish for Perch, Sun Fish and Bass to put in my very own aquarium!I could catch Grasshoppers and Crickets in my back yard to feed to them (which I used to do anyway for fun, then just release them)! I asked my dad if I could start looking for one, and he said yes, but I had to pay for everything, the aquarium, the rocks, the plants, the pump and the food all with my own money! I got home and started looking. The first day was not too good, but the second day I found a twenty gallon aquarium kit for only a hundred dollars! I started to count all the money I saved over this summer and last summer. I had saved up more than enough for everything I needed to purchase, and I was just about to order it when my mom told me to wait one day because tomorrow she was taking me to a small pet shop we had never been in, to look and see if there was a better aquarium. So the next day we went in and it was five times bigger than we had always thought from the road. The place was called: BirdDog & CatFish. We went in, and because the shop was a lot smaller than big brand pet stores, and was owned by locals (Thanks Mike and Trish!), they knew a ton about the fish and what you needed or did not need to help your fish live happy and healthy. I went over and looked at their aquarium kits and they had a twenty nine gallon aquarium (nine whole gallons more than the one online) for the price as the twenty gallon online! Sold! Later that night we had it filled, set up, decorated naturally and there was just one thing missing, fish!
The next day we went fishing in the Comal River, and my dad caught two small perch! We took them home in my aerated cooler and put them in my aquarium. I named one Scar because of a scar on his side, and one Rocky because he looked like a Rock Bass. After the first day, Scar was eating Crickets like crazy, but Rocky was not doing well. He started to flip and he would not eat anything, so me and my family took him to a lake to let him go (checkout my Surprising Lake blog for more info on the lake). We let him go, and he swam off fast and fine. I went over to the dock with my fly rod and a Grass Hopper fly, and almost instantly caught two giant sunfish! We took them back in my live well and put them in the aquarium. After two days, they all got used to each other and all started eating well. I now have a school of about five freshwater minnows (I started with ten! I guess they like them!) in my aquarium. I am starting a real ecosystem in my room!
