Unhooking Catfish

 

Hello fishing men and women! In one of the comments I have read, there was a blog request on how to unhook catfish more easily. Catfish are some of the hardest fish to unhook because typically they swallow the hook instead of getting hooked in the lip. Another reason is that some people use treble hooks if their using dough bait, but treble hooks usually gets stuck in the fish’s mouth more than a regular hook. One of the easier ways to unhook a slimy freshwater Catfish is to take fish pliers (down below) and reach down, grab the hook, push down slightly (to push the hook out), and then slowly pull the hook up and out of the fish’s mouth. That’s the way to unhook a freshwater catfish, but for the many saltwater fishing men and women out there, here’s a different tip. Sometimes, you may come across a Hard Head catfish (which live in saltwater). Hard Head Catfish have a fin on top of their back that can sting you really bad. (OUCH)! The easiest way to unhook a Hard Head Catfish is to grab the hook with pliers, and fling the catfish around doing front flips pointing towards the water, and eventually, the hook will lose its grip on the Hard Head’s stomach (scroll down to see a video of someone doing it). You can also look down to see a Catfish hook that can hold the dough but it’s not a treble hook!
