Kayaking Down The Guadalupe Part 2

Hey fellow fishing lovers! Today I will be telling you guys what happened on the second half of the Guadalupe River!

 

So, like I said in my last blog, we finished going down the Devils Play Ground rapids and realized we had a long way to go! We set off down the Guadalupe River towards where my mom and sister were going to pick us up. My dad and I fished forever with the Zebcos and fly rods, but still hadn’t had a fish sense the four at the beginning. It was fun going down the river for a while, but we got tired quick. Then I saw a gravel bank next to some rapids, and my dad and I decided to park our kayaks. We got out with waders on and waded out while fly fishing for about thirty minutes. We did not get hit or see any fish, and that spot started to get a little crowded with fly fishermen, so we started wading back to our kayaks.

The water was very murky on the way back from us wading up the river and kicking up mud, so I could not see the bottom. I also had heavy boots on, and the current was pushing me. All of the sudden, I tripped over a rock underwater and fell in! My life vest was able to keep my head above the water. But my waders filled and the rest of my body was soaked! My dad waded over and helped me out of the river, which is when we realized in the process of tripping and falling into the river, I snapped the tip of my fly rod off. I was honestly super upset. I broke my first ever fly rod, got soaked, and it was all because one little rock. After drying my waders and me off, I changed into some spare dry clothes my dad and I packed, and we kept going!

We tried fly fishing with the other fly rod, but we just couldn’t spot any more Trout, and we were running low on time.

After that was about a three mile span with no flow, rapids, fish or people. The wind was blowing the water backwards, creating a reverse current. Which made those three miles five times as hard to paddle down. Once we were nearing the last few miles, we ran into multiple patches of extreme rapids. Here is a pic of us going down one:

We soon came upon a large warning sign that said: Warning! Damn four hundred yards ahead. Stay left.

You can imagine how nervous my dad and I were! Staying left, we went through a crazy chute, with rapids and huge white capped waves. Finally we made it through them, and then it was another multi-mile paddle with the same wind problem. After another long paddle, finally, we made it to a grassy bank. Near some shallow water, my mom and sister picked us up. Both of us nearly fainted in the car. We were exhausted, our arms and shoulders were about to fall off from paddling, and we were both extremely dehydrated. We finally made it home, and boy were we tired!
