Every so often, I’m going to blog about a specific fish and all I know about it and my experience with fishing for it. Today, we’ll start with Bluegill. Bluegills are a type of freshwater fish. They like: worms, mayflies, small spoons, small spinner baits, and pretty much anything shiny or lively. The way you know it is a Bluegill is if it has a big, blue dot on its gills. Bluegill also have small mouths, which causes a problem if it swallows your lure. Bluegill are very tasty, but are so small it takes about 10 just to feed 2 people! Bluegill live in: rivers, lakes, ponds, and creeks. Bluegill are a type of SUNFISH, that can be anywhere from about 1 inch to 8 inches in most areas. When Bluegill spawn, they make a perfectly round underwater breeding nest, which is where they lay their eggs. Bluegill are my favorite fish to fish for because once you find one, there are multiple. They are fun to catch on rooster tails and small jigs, also corks and worms. They’re one of the tastiest fish I’ve ever eaten. Don’t be fooled by their cuteness, either; I once caught a 1” bluegill so kept it on the hook and tried it as bait, and sure enough almost immediately an 8” bluegill came to eat it and I hooked it and reeled it in!
