Catching Spring Bass

Hello fellow fisher men and women! Sorry I have not posted a blog in a while. But, as you all now it is hard to go fishing when you are in a lock down at home! Luckily we were able to sneak in a fishing trip at my friends private lake (the same lake I wrote the Truck load of Bass blog on), and boy was it a trip!

We got there right around eleven am, and right away I started catching small Bass. I caught them on a white and lime green spinner bait. We were catching fish after fish after fish when, about an hour in, the Bass stopped hitting the spinner bait! I did not know if it had to do with the time of day, or the fish just lost interest in it, but I had to find a new lure quick!

My dad had been experimenting with different lures this whole time, and eventually he landed on about a three-inch long silver soft body swim bait hooked to a small jig head, and that rig started catching fish. I on the other hand switched to a pre-rigged bright pink and green tadpole jig, and it started catching fish like crazy, but like the spinner bait, the swim bait and jig bites slowed way down.

I kept the jig head on from the pre-rigged tadpole jig and threw on a small sanko I made from some old artificial lures. After catching two fish on that, the fish stopped hitting the sanko too! After a little more lure changing, my dad finally landed on the best lure yet! A simple small black and yellow jig head pared with a white jig with a lime green paddle tail. We found out that with this rig, we could catch small Bass, big Bass, and even huge Blue Gill!

We fished this one area for a while, and caught loads of Bass, but they were all small, and eventually the bite died down, so we decided to move a little to the right. I left the jig and jig head rig on one rod, but I switched my rod to a jig head with a spinning blade and pared it with a three inch soft plastic gray brake body minnow, and that is when I caught multiple Bass, and a Blue Gill closing in on my Personal Best!

It was fun catching spring bass, but it was time to wrap up. Before we left we wanted to try fishing the shallower corner of the lake. When we got to the spot, I pulled out my jig head with the spinning blade. I pared it with a soft plastic gray brake body minnow. My dad threw the white and lime green paddle tail jig, and we both caught loads there! And that is where I caught the biggest Bass of the day, about a one and a half pounder!

It wasn’t huge, but like I mentioned in my Truck load of Bass blog, the lake is overpopulated with Bass, stunting their growth, leaving the largest fish only growing to be a few pounds.

I stopped at one more spot right before we were going to leave. I ended on about a 1/4 pound Large Mouth Bass! Even though we didn’t catch any monsters, it is always fun to go catch that many Bass!
